Walmart’s Android TV-Powered Onn 2K Streaming Stick Pops Up at the FCC

  • Reading time:2 mins read

A recent filing at the FCC suggests Walmart could be prepping to launch a streaming stick under its Onn brand of personal electronics. The filing, spotted by Android TV Guide, indicates the device, listed as the Onn 2K Streaming Stick, features a traditional HDMI streaming stick form factor and packs a compact remote control that appears to follow what could be Google’s reference designs.

The device itself features curved, rounded edges compared to the sharper angles of, say, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick line. The overall length, including the HDMI connection, appears to be 3.85 inches (98 mm), while the width is listed at 1.38 inches (35mm). Those dimensions indicate we’re dealing with a slightly larger device than those Fire TV Stick options, as well as Roku’s Streaming Stick Plus.

As for the device’s capabilities, the listed name, 2K Streaming Stick, suggests we’re dealing with a device that tops out at 1080p (1,920 x 1,080), rather than 4K. That likely means Walmart is aiming to position this device against other budget streaming options like, again, the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite.

The included remote features a circular directional pad, power control and a dedicated Google Assistant button. Toward the bottom, four hotkeys can be seen in the FCC filing. In the model shown, those hotkeys offer direct access to YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. It’s a setup we’ve seen in several other streaming device remotes over the years, including Roku’s gear as well as Sony’s streaming remote for its PlayStation 5.

Elsewhere, the available images also show what appears to be a micro-USB cable for power, instead of the newer USB-C connection we’re starting to see on more devices. As for pricing and a release date, we’ll likely have to wait for an official announcement or store listing from Walmart. For now, though, we’ll keep an eye out for the new streaming device and we’ll report back when we learn more about its debut.
