Friday The 13th (1980)
Who knew that a film about a deranged mother would kick off one of the most successful horror franchises of all-time and 11 sequels? The first film focuses on 7 camp counselors, Jason’s mother, and mysterious murders on the grounds of an eerie Camp Crystal Lake where a boy drowned 21 years earlier.
Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)
The first sequel of the long-running franchise, Friday the 13th Part 2 takes place 5 years after the events of the original, as Jason welcomes a new group of counselors at Camp Crystal Lake in a way that only he can.
Friday The 13th Part III (1982)
The third film of the franchise sees a fully recovered Jason return to take out a new set of coeds who set foot onto the sacred grounds of Camp Crystal Lake.
Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
Like the previous film, the Final Chapter was scheduled to be the final installment in the franchise, but the film was a massive financial success, making more than 12 times its budget, which is why a 5th film was released a year later.
Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
The 5th film in the Friday the 13th franchise is infamous for having a high number of on-screen murders, being universally panned by critics, lots of drug use, and attempting to go in a new direction with the man under the hockey mask. However, due to lower box office returns, the franchise decided to go back to making Jason the main antagonist in subsequent films.
Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)
After a disappointing 5th film, Mrs. Voorhees’ baby boy returns and becomes the supernatural force that he’s known for over the years. Not only was Jason resurrected, but the 6th film was a resurrection for the franchise as it has become a fan favorite over the years.
Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
The 7th film of the franchise tried to keep things fresh by having the antagonistic slasher take on a girl with telekinetic abilities (like Carrie), but the film ended up being critically panned, yet it was a box office success.
Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
In another film that was supposed to be the last one in the series, Jason takes a trip to the Big Apple. At time of release, it was the most expensive film of the franchise, yet it was the poorest performing film domestically at the box office. The film is credited as being the most stylish of the 12 movies in the series.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
Following the events of the previous film, The Final Friday sees the spirit of Jason possess other people as they do his killings for him. The supernatural elements and the lack of physical presence of Jason is what separates the 9th film from its predecessors.
Jason X (2002)
Set 445 years in the future in space, Jason X is a sci-fi horror as the titular character is enhanced with future cyborg technology instead of being a human entity like previous films. In the 10th film of the franchise, Jason is aboard a spaceship in the year 2455 and he stalks and kills the students on board.
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
This crossover film sees 2 horror icons go head-to-head in a battle to the death. Freddy Kruger and Jason Vorhees rack up kills against unsuspecting teens in their last films before both franchises got reboots. Freddy vs. Jason was the highest-grossing film of the Friday the 13th franchise.
Friday The 13th (2009)
The final film (for now) in the franchise. The 2009 reboot is a re-imagining of the first four films in the series, as it gives the audience a sense of familiarity by portraying Jason’s origins in a sympathetic way. However, he’s still a murderous masked menace with a machete. This is the second highest-grossing film in the franchise.
Jason Voorhees has become an iconic part of Americana and the Friday the 13th franchise has gone on to become a staple of the horror genre. With the last movie being released over a decade ago there have been rumblings of a new film in development, but nothing has come to fruition yet. Hopefully, the 13th film in this iconic franchise can resurrect it like Halloween (2018) did for Michael Myers. Until then, kick back, relax and enjoy the 12 films that we have on your favorite streaming services this Friday the 13th.
