Streaming has changed the way we watch TV, right down to the actual TVs we buy. A recent report by Hub Entertainment Research shows that the adoption of Smart TVs is higher than ever now, with the majority of TV homes owning one. As of this year, 7 out of 10 TV households now own a Smart TV the highest percentage it’s ever been.
Additionally, 52% of all TV sets are now reported to be smart TVs, up from last year’s 45%. The growing percentage indicates consumers are switching out their old TVs in favor of upgrading to new, smarter versions.
As might be expected, the greatest proportions of smart TV ownership are within homes of a younger generation. Smart TVS make up 61% of all TVs in homes where the oldest person is under age 35. The younger generation is clearly onboard with streaming given that 1 in 5 millennials have never even subscribed to a cable or satellite television service. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a Smart TV when it has all the added features you’d want for a great streaming experience. And even younger than millennials, Smart TVs make up 59% of all sets in homes with children under the age of 18.
With Smart TV consumer adoption on the rise, streaming devices like Roku and Fire TV have been taking advantage by outfitting more Smart TV sets with their software. The study shows that more than half (57%) of TV households now say they have a Roku/Fire TV device or TV, up from the 51% from last year.
